Thursday, March 13th
Evil Breaks presents:

: : : : : : : B A S S D R O P : : : : : : :

REN THE VINYL ARCHAEOLOGIST (True Skool)
90's Dance Set

San Francisco stalwart, (by way of NYC) Ren The Vinyl Archaeologist, has been holding it down for SF hip-hop culture since 2000. A great proponent of the four elements of hip hop, Ren in conjunction with his magazine/newsletter Trueskool, promotes events related to b-boying, emceeing, dj'ing, and the written word graffiti. Ren's persistence and dedication has earned him spots alongside greats such as: Grandmaster Flash, Afrika Bambaataa, Q-Bert, KRS-One, and Cut Chemist.

In terms of abilites, they don't call him The Vinyl Archaeologist for nothing! Ren is notorious for digging deep in the crates for uncanny surprises. Expect to hear some 90's dance tunes in the vein of: C+C, Technotronic, as well as some 80's heat such as: New Order, Man Parrish, Newcleus, Information Society, Rob Base + EZ Rock all mixed with his inimitable hip-hop flair.

KUZE (Nitewise)

Ah, I just have to say that I've been on tribe.net for a while and had no idea this was here! I saw the Quannum tour a few years back. I drove four hours there, and drove four hours back just to see them. I am way excited about this tribe. When I spotted it while browsing, a beat skipped in my soul!

FELA
Underground Spiritual Game -- Mixed by Chief Xcel
A surprisingly wonderful little project -- one that brings together shorter snippets of Fela's classic tunes, into an extended sound collage that's got a really captivating feel! We initially expected this one to be gimmicky and a bit silly, but it's not -- and instead stands as a loving "mixtape"! (From Dusty groove)

Didn't care too much for the Gab and Lateef track on Red,Hot, and Riot but Xcel's sampling of "Colonial Mentality" on NIA wasd on point. Looking forward to this mix

I have noticed recentyl that there is a lot of Quannum artists being used for comercials lately. The two that I can quickly recall are the beer commercial feat. Latryx - the Life; and the new Coke commerical with Adrian Brody feat Lyrics Born, forgot the song, but it is from his new ablum. Anybody know of any others. Personally I am pleased to hear them on commericals. Thoughts?

Lateef the Truth Speaker is guesting on Fatboy Slim's new album.

"Damon Albarn sings on one track, Bootsy Collins sings on another and Lateef from Blackalicious has done some great stuff.

"The last album had a lot of house on it and this is getting back to my hip-hop roots more. Basically, I'm just not turned on by house music much at the moment."

Just saw the kickoff of the Quannum World 2004 tour. One of the best damn shows I've attended. They gave Portland some mad love, 3 encores and a nice freestyle session at the end with all the mc's. Definitely definitely check this shit out if it comes through your town!

from the solesides website:

We're pleased to
announce the Maroons Mixtape Contest!

Below please find the copy for the tape in question. This is going to be in a
CD slipcase only two sides, 5"x5", plus the CD label itself. It's totally up to you,
we don't have any preferences in terms of style, format, good taste, etc. Nudity
and profanity are (mildly) discouraged.

Entries are due by April 1 or until we decide to just bag the whole
idea. The mix itself is pretty dope, we should mention. Unreleased
Maroons hotness? Sheesh.

Maroons Truth Spoken Mixtape Volume One
Mixed by DJ D-Sharp

Cross post for 3/20 demonstration

The given Gift of Gab was against the war so think about it.

I'll be posting this in all kinds of left-ist-ish tribes and groups et cetera for forgive the redundancy. Please repost widely as you see fit.

On March 20 there are going to be protests against the continued occupation of Iraq. These will take place all over the world with the hope of exceeding the turnout of 2/15/2003.

March 20 is the one-year anniversary of the attack by the United States and the UK. These have led to a minimum of 10,000 Iraqi deaths and over 500 Americans. This has also alienated much of the world to an extent rarely acheived since the emergence of anything resembling a world community. These are just some of the problems with the invasion for example the fiscal irresponsibility of it would be even more prevalent in the protest if it weren't for the body count.

There will be large regional demonstrations throughout the United States. If you are interested in helping organize and would like contact information for your closest organizing group drop me a message and if I don't know it I'll find it.

Just had a listen. I liked it, but it didn't blow me away like most of the other artists work. Maybe it will grow on me more.
